Seminyak
Seminyak is the easy, polished first base: boutiques, high-end dining and sunset beach clubs along a wide west-facing beach, with a walkable core and an easy run in from the airport.
Where it falls shortIt is the island's most polished corner, so it suits comfort budgets better than backpacker ones, and wild nature and adventure live elsewhere.

Canggu
Surf, cafes and coworking on the southwest coast; energetic and social, with real traffic at peak hours.
Read our Canggu guideTreat this as a starting point, not a verdict: the areas are close together, and plenty of people split one trip across two bases.

Common questions
Which area of Bali should I stay in?
It depends on the trip you want. Canggu for surf, cafes and remote work; Ubud for culture, jungle and calm; Seminyak for a polished, walkable beach base; Uluwatu for cliffs and world-class surf; Sanur for calm water and family ease. The quiz above weighs exactly those trade-offs, and many travellers simply split the trip across two bases.
Should I stay in Canggu or Ubud?
Canggu gives you the coast: surf, beach bars and a busy social and coworking scene. Ubud gives you the inland side: rice terraces, temples, yoga and quieter evenings, also with a well-established remote-work base. Beach versus jungle is the honest dividing line, and combining a few nights of each is a classic Bali itinerary.
Seminyak or Canggu: which is better?
Seminyak is more polished and more walkable, with high-end dining, boutiques and beach clubs, and it is the shorter run from the airport: roughly 25 to 35 minutes against Canggu's 45 to 90, depending on traffic. Canggu is more of a surf-and-laptop scene: livelier, younger and more spread out. Comfort and ease point to Seminyak; scene and surf point to Canggu.
Where should I stay in Bali with kids?
Sanur is the classic family answer: an offshore reef keeps the water shallow and calm, and the long flat beachfront path is ideal for small legs and bikes. Seminyak works well for comfort-focused families too. Uluwatu is the tricky one with very young children, since many of its beaches involve steep stairs and strong currents.
Where do digital nomads stay in Bali?
Canggu is the island's remote-work hub, built around coworking spaces, cafes and consistent data. Ubud is the established second choice for people who want the same setup with jungle calm instead of a beach scene. On connectivity, both are well covered: Goodbars runs on Telkomsel, the strongest network across Bali.
