Piaynemo

On the map

There is no usable signal at Piaynemo. Telkomsel is the only network with any presence in Raja Ampat and it is patchy even in the settlements, so nothing out here is a data trip.

What Piaynemo is

Piaynemo is a viewpoint in the Fam islands, northwest of Waigeo, looking out over a cluster of mushroom-shaped limestone islets in shallow turquoise water. It is the picture that sells Raja Ampat, and it is the more accessible of the two great karst viewpoints, the other being Wayag much further north. Piaynemo is not a place you stay: it is a jetty, a staircase and a platform, visited on a day boat and left the same afternoon.

The staircase and the viewpoint

The climb is a built wooden and concrete staircase from the jetty to a railed platform, a few hundred steps and around fifteen to twenty minutes at a steady pace. It is the easiest famous climb in Raja Ampat by a distance, with handrails most of the way and no scrambling, though the steps are steep and the humidity does the work the gradient does not. From the platform the islets fan out below in layers, with pale sand channels running between them. Morning light is kinder than midday, when the water flattens out to white glare.

Telaga Bintang and the lagoons

Most Piaynemo trips add Telaga Bintang, the star-shaped lagoon a short boat hop away, and that one is a genuine scramble rather than a staircase. The route up is bare limestone, sharp underfoot and on the hands, and it needs shoes with grip and a willingness to use all four limbs for a few minutes. The reward is the view down onto a lagoon whose arms form a rough star. Elsewhere among the Fam islands there are shallow channels and small bays where boats stop to swim or snorkel between viewpoints.

Getting there by boat

Piaynemo is reached by open boat, commonly around two hours each way from Waisai on Waigeo, and longer from homestays further east. Cost is driven almost entirely by fuel and distance, which is why trips are usually shared and priced by the boat rather than the seat. The crossing is open water and can be wet and rough, so dry-bag anything electronic and expect spray. Weather cancels these runs regularly. Build spare days into your Raja Ampat plan rather than betting the whole trip on one fixed date.

Permits and what to bring

Raja Ampat's conservation permit is mandatory and is genuinely checked, at the ferry and at the sites, so arrange it before you set out. It is bought online or at the official counter on arrival, and the amount has been revised over the years, so confirm the current figure and the accepted payment method through official channels rather than an old blog post. Keep the card or receipt on you. Beyond that, bring your own water, sun protection, a hat, shoes with grip and a dry bag; there are no shops on the islands and nothing on the boat you did not carry aboard.

Phone signal at Piaynemo

Expect no usable signal at Piaynemo or on the crossing, and no eSIM changes that. Telkomsel is effectively the only network with any presence in Raja Ampat, which is why Goodbars runs on it, but presence is not coverage: as of July 2026 it is patchy even in the settlements, workable in Waisai and parts of Waigeo, and thin to absent across the outer islands. Do the connected work before you leave the harbour. Download offline maps, send what needs sending, tell people at home you will be uncontactable for the day, and treat any bar you find out there as luck rather than a plan.
