Rinca Island

On the map

There is no mobile coverage inside Komodo National Park. You are offline from the moment the boat leaves Labuan Bajo harbour, and no eSIM changes that.

What Rinca Island is

Rinca is the second of the two big dragon islands in Komodo National Park, lying between Komodo island and the Flores coast, and it is the one closest to Labuan Bajo. It is the same kind of country as its bigger neighbour: dry savannah, thorn scrub, brown hills and mangrove-lined inlets, with free-ranging Komodo dragons living across it. Rinca carries less of the name recognition than Komodo, which is exactly why plenty of trips end up here instead.

Why boats go to Rinca instead of Komodo

Rinca is the shorter boat ride and often the more reliable sighting, so a lot of day trips out of Labuan Bajo take the dragon walk here rather than on Komodo. The crossing is a fraction of the run out to Komodo island, which leaves time in the same day for the Padar climb and a snorkel stop. Dragons also gather around the ranger station area, and the open savannah makes them easier to spot than dense cover would. If your itinerary lists one dragon walk and does not say which island, ask, because it is usually this one.

Loh Buaya and the ranger walk

Boats land at Loh Buaya on the east side, where the whole visitor area was rebuilt with an elevated walkway and new buildings in a project completed in the early 2020s. The redevelopment drew real criticism from conservationists who argued a concrete build had no place in dragon habitat, and it is worth knowing that before you arrive expecting a rough field station. From there a ranger leads short, medium or long loop trails, with the longer options climbing a hill for a view over the bay and the mangroves. Going with a ranger is mandatory, not optional.

Dragons and the other wildlife

The rules are the same as on Komodo, because the animals are the same: dragons are venomous, fast over short distances and unpredictable, particularly around food. Hold the distance your ranger sets, stay with the group, do not step off for a better angle, and tell the ranger before you set off if you have an open cut. Beyond the dragons you are likely to see Timor deer, wild boar, water buffalo wallowing in mud and long-tailed macaques along the trail. Sightings are likely rather than certain, and the midday heat quiets everything down.

Fees, timing and what to bring

Rinca sits inside Komodo National Park, so entry and ranger charges apply, and they have been raised, withdrawn and restructured repeatedly in recent years. Reporting also describes a daily visitor cap and online pre-booking through the park's official system. No second-hand figure is safe to rely on, so confirm the current amounts and what your trip covers in writing, and check them against official park channels. On the ground it is hot, dusty and almost shadeless: carry your own water, wear closed shoes for the trail, and take sun protection and a hat.

Phone signal on Rinca Island

There is none, even though Rinca is the closest of the park islands to town: you are offline from the moment the boat leaves Labuan Bajo harbour. Goodbars runs on Telkomsel, which reaches further across Indonesia than any other network, and its value here is being connected in town rather than out in the park. As of July 2026 there is no usable coverage inside Komodo National Park, on the crossing or on the trails, and no eSIM changes that. Download offline maps, send anything that matters before you sail, and expect to be uncontactable until you are back in the bay.

Common questions

Can you see Komodo dragons on Rinca?

Yes, and Rinca is often the more reliable of the two dragon islands. Dragons gather around the Loh Buaya station area and the open savannah makes them easier to spot, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Is Rinca or Komodo island better for a day trip?

Rinca for a day trip, in most cases. It is a much shorter boat ride from Labuan Bajo, which leaves room in the same day for Padar and a snorkel stop. Komodo island carries the bigger name and the longer crossing.

Do you need a ranger to walk on Rinca?

Yes, it is mandatory. Rangers meet every group at Loh Buaya, lead short, medium or long loop trails, set the distance you keep from any dragon and decide when the group moves.

How long is the Rinca dragon walk?

You choose between short, medium and long loops at the ranger station. The short loop suits most day-trip schedules; the longer ones climb a hill for a view over the bay and the mangroves.

Do you have to pay to visit Rinca Island?

Yes. Komodo National Park charges entry and ranger fees, and the amounts have been raised, cancelled and restructured more than once. Confirm the current figures through official park channels before you travel.

Is there phone signal on Rinca Island?

No. Despite being the closest park island to Labuan Bajo, there is no usable coverage anywhere inside Komodo National Park, and no eSIM changes that. Send what matters before the boat leaves harbour.
